Players can only migrate the gender of their Hero save file from Fable II, no in-game choices affect Fable III. The Royal Hero has three main methods of attack: a melee attack, a ranged attack, and magic. The player can customize each of these attacks with different weapons, such as choosing between a sword or hammer as a melee weapon, or the capability of combining two types of spells. Attacks can be held and charged in order to unleash powerful flourishes. The Hero disciplines formerly known as Strength, Skill and Will are not referred to as extensively as in previous Fable titles. In the context of the Road to Rule upgrade system they are known respectively as Melee, Ranged and Magic. In the context of effects on the Hero’s appearance, they are known as Strength, Stature and Magical Aura these are attained over time as opposed to being automatically incurred with upgrades. As seen in the item description of The Channeler, phrases such as ‘Will User’ have been replaced with ‘Spellcaster’ in keeping with gameplay. Unlike other games in the series, Fable III now boasts two categories for melee (blade and bludgeoning) and ranged weapons (pistol and carbine).

The first part concerns the gathering of allies to overthrow King Logan and install the player character as the new ruler of Albion. As the younger child of the Hero, the game is split into two distinct sections. The player’s character, the Prince or Princess, is forced to lead a revolution against King Logan, who has become a tyrant since succeeding to the throne following the death of the previous monarch, the Hero from Fable 2. This latest instalment returns to the continent of Albion, which is now entering its industrial age, and is also now under the rule of the tyrant King Logan who is also the player’s elder brother. Fable III is set fifty years after the events of Fable II.
